ACCOMMODATION
Although the majority of Uyuni's hotels are aimed at backpackers, there are several smarter
options. Most places stay open late for train passengers arriving in the middle of the night.
Hotels fill up between June and September, when it is worth booking in advance.
Los Girasoles Santa Cruz 155 02 6933323, [e-mail] . “ The Sun-
flowers ” is another comfortable mid-range choice featuring pleasant rooms with private bath-
rooms, heaters, TVs and plenty of spa ce. Interne t access, laundry service and bike rental are
all available. Rates include breakfast. Bs480 ($69)
Hotel Avenida Av Ferroviaria 11 02 6932078. The best budget option in town, with clean,
functional rooms set around a sunny central courtyard brightened up with rows of flowers.
It's diago nally opposite the train station, and big enough to ensure getting a room is rarely a

Hotel Jardins de Uyuni Av Potosí 113 02 6932989. Under renovation at the time of re-
search, this smart hotel, a short walk from the centre, has attractive communal areas slung
with hammocks, a small indoor pool and a very welcome sauna. Th e rooms don't quite match
up to the rest of the hotel, but are still very comfortable. Bs500 ($71)

Some r ooms are a bit gloomy, so ask to see a few before making your choice. Breakfast in-

La Magia de Uyuni Colón 432 02 6932541, hostalmagiauyuni.com . Despite a much-
needed revamp this hotel still emits a certain old-world charm, with wooden bannisters and
doors, chairs fashioned from salt in the covered courtyard, and antique rifles on display in the
restau rant. Rooms come with private bathrooms, TVs and rustic decor. Breakfast included.

Hostal Marith Potosí 61 02 6932174. This Uyuni stalwart has a mo tley collection of
rooms set around a central courtyard; they're clean but can get very chilly. Bs60
La Petite Porte Av Ferroviaria 7388 5960, hotel-lapetiteporte-uyuni.com . This de-
lightful B&B, a ten-minute walk east of the train station, has just three super-stylish rooms
with wooden floors, central heating and private b athrooms. Service is excellent, and break-
fast is included. Advance reservations are a must. Bs560 ($80 )
Toñito Hotel Av Ferroviaria 60 02 6933186, bolivianexpeditions.com . Well-run hotel
with “new” and “old” wings set around two communal lounges: rooms in both are bright
and comfy with private bathrooms and big beds; the new ones are a little smarter and have
heaters. Staff are friendly, and there's a good book exchange, wi-f i and laund ry service. An
excellent breakfast is included at the attached Minuteman pizzaria . Bs400 ($57)
