In-Depth Information
Back-Stube Pasteleria Alemana Just off the Plaza Principal. German café-bakery serving
excellent breakfasts, home-made cakes, salads, sandwiches and main meals (Bs30-50): for a
hearty feed, try the saurbraten (a thick beef stew served with noodle-style dumplings). It has
a wonderful terrace affording yet more amazing views, and plays a 1960s/70s soundtrack.
Open Wed-Fri 10am-2.30pm & 6.30-10pm, Sat-Sun 9am-10pm.
El Cafetal In the hostal of the same name. Great-value French-run restaurant with panoramic
views and delicious food (Bs20-50), including trout lasagne, steak in Roquefort sauce,
crêpes, soufflés and curries. All that's missing is the French wine, although Tarija supplies a
fine substitute. Wed-Mon 8.30am-4pm & 6.30-9.30pm.
Carla's Garden Pub 50m down the steps beyond Hostal Kory. This relaxed spot with views
down the valley is a great spot for a sundowner - choose from draught beers (around Bs15)
or well-mixed cocktails. The only problem is struggling back up the steps to the plaza at the
end of the night. Mon-Sat 6pm-midnight.
La Casa Julio Zuazo Cuenca, two blocks east of the plaza, 7328 1035. Akin to a con-
tinental sitting room, complete with cuckoo clock and cheesy European jigsaw scenes, this
German-run restaurant serves authentic fondues for a minimum of two people, including a
chocolate version, as well as dishes like raclette and goulash (Bs30-50). Daily from 6pm.
Nido de Uchi On the plaza. A fine spot to sample locally produced fair-trade coffee
(Bs4-15), Nido de Uchi also has breakfast options (Bs10-28), sandwiches, cakes, pancakes
and ice cream sundaes. It doubles up as an internet café. Open daily.
Villa Bonita In the garden of the hotel of the same name. This idyllic garden café has
just a handful of chairs, delightful service and a concise menu with wonderful breakfasts
(Bs10-19), pastas, salads, sandwiches and pancakes. The highlights, however, are the mouth-
watering home-made ice creams and sorbets (Bs4/scoop) flavoured with local ingredients
like hierba buena (a type of mint), lavender and passion fruit: the sundaes (Bs15-29) should
not be missed. Daily 8.30am-5.30pm.
