HIKES AROUND COROICO
Coroicoissurroundedbylushsubtropicalhillsandvalleysthatoffernumerouspossibilities
for hiking. Although you can do some hikes on your own, it is often safer - and easier - to
go with a guide; they are available from the tourist information office on the main plaza.
TO CERRO UCHUMACHI AND THE WATERFALLS
In recent years there have been several robberies and rapes on both the Uchumachi and
waterfalls hikes. Travellers are strongly advised to seek local advice before setting out and
certainly not to attempt either hike alone.
Thehikeup Cerro Uchumachi ,thehillrisingaboveCoroico, takes abouttwohoursthere
and back. To reach the summit, continue uphill beyond the Hotel Esmeralda along a path
marked by the Stations of the Cross, which leads to the El Calvario chapel. From here a
path climbs to the summit, marked by three wooden crosses; there are excellent views.
To reach the waterfalls ( cascadas ), from the chapel, follow the path to your left (if you're
facing uphill) around the hillside; the trip takes three to four hours return.
TO PUENTE MURURATA
A difficult to follow but rewarding hike follows the path that heads down into the valley
to the Río Coroico from beside the football pitch. After about an hour's walk downhill the
path hits the main road to Caranavi; turn right and you'll soon reach Puente Mururata , a
bridge over the stream of the same name, upstream of which there are some pools where
you can swim. From the other side of Puente Mururata a path climbs to the left of the road
to the peaceful Afro-Yungueño village of Tocaña , about a twenty-minute walk away.
THE KORI HUAYKU TRAIL
This new trail (around 8-9hr return) starts from Coroico Viejo, near the settlement of Yo-
losa. Guides can take you through coca fields to the Kori Río Huayku, from where you fol-
low an old Inca trail. There are opportunities to swim and spot monkeys and other wildlife.
