Perched at about 3200m on the side of a deep valley and about 260km by road from La
Paz,
CHARAZANI
is the market centre for the Kallawaya communities, and the nearest
town to the Trans-Apolobamba Trek, north across the heart of the Cordillera Apolobamba to
are sculpted into pre-Hispanic terraces. A few crumbling colonial houses still survive, but
most of the town's buildings are cheap, modern constructions. A couple of
pensiones
on the
plaza serve simple meals.
