Feria de El Alto
Thurs & Sun early morning to mid-afternoon
If you do want to spend some time in this harsh but fascinating environment, it's worth going
up to see it's staggeringly huge market , the Feria de El Alto, known locally as La Dieciseis
(The Sixteenth), which is held in the streets around the Plaza 16 de Julio in La Ceja, the
main downtown district of El Alto. Selling everything from the latest knock-off gadgetry and
plastic Chinese tat to cars and, sadly, live animals, it's a major part of what makes El Alto
tick. It's also a pickpocket's paradise, so make sure your cash is out of temptation's way.
Lucha libre de cholitas
Multifuncional de la Ceja, Av Naciones Unidas • Sun 4-7pm • Bs80 with a package from Andean Secrets on
Gonzales and Almirante Grau, San Pedro • cholitaswrestling.com
El Alto is probably the last place you'd expect to find Mexican-style wrestling, yet - as ever
- Bolivia turns your expectations upside down, quite literally, as bowler-hatted cholitas aim
flying pigtailed kicks at each other and a motley array of male and female masked baddies,
while a mixed local/gringo crowd lap it up. It might not be in the best of tastes, but it's put El
Alto firmly on the tourist map.
