In-Depth Information
Income poverty can be defined by the poverty headcount, for example,
the proportion of the population living on less than US$1.25 per day.
The Human Poverty Index (HPI-1 and 2), a development of the
United Nations' HDI, is an effective measure of a wider set of indica-
tors reflecting poverty. In 2010 it was superseded by the
Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) as a wider multidimensional
assessment of poverty.

Howard White's (2008) essay on 'The measurement of poverty', in Desai
and Potter's Companion to Development Studies (2008) provides a
good overview of poverty concepts, measures of poverty and a brief
survey of 'dollar a day' estimates of poverty for the regions making up
the developing world. Good data are given year by year for regions of
the developing world in the United Nations Development Programme's
(UNDP) Human Development Reports , which can be downloaded from
the UNDP website (www.undp.org).
