Introduction
Prepare Yourself, We're About to Depart!
Tourism in Italy is a very ancient practice: in the late 17 th century aristocrats used to go to
Italy during the Grand Tour, to refine their knowledge and increase their culture, and still
today Italy is one of the best-known countries all over the world, where tens of thousands
of tourists travel to, every year, especially for its history, culture, art, cuisine, fashion and
nature.
Italy is the country with the highest number of World Heritage Sites in the world (50 out of
1001).
On the other hand, the Italians are a population of travel lovers: you can find them all over
the world, and also for this reason it is not so difficult to know some Italian words, such
as GRAZIE and BUONGIORNO. Despite that, not many Italian people speak English very
well, even though English is a compulsory subject they study at school since the elementary
school (except older people, who sometimes used to study French). Also for this reason they
will understand your difficulty with a foreign language, and they will try to help you, strug-
gling to find out what you are trying to say, and answering to you with some English words,
probably with an absurd grammar, and, above all, gesticulating.
Nonetheless, learning some words, and a bit of the culture of the place you are going to visit
is a sign of respect and friendship towards the country and the people you are going to meet,
