Sicily:
Since it's the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea as well as the 5 th largest island in all
of Europe, Sicily has a lot to see and discover for travelers looking for an Italian Island get-
away. Here you'll find an eclectic mix of cultures, food, and language. There's plenty to do
inSicily, andplenty ofancient history totake inaswell. There'salso plenty ofnatural scenic
beauty to behold too, from Mount Etna and her smoking craters to the quieter, almost undis-
covered beaches on the southern coast.
Travel Tip: Sicily has a rather lovely climate all year round
that stays relatively mild throughout the year. Summers will be busy
with tourists, so try spring and autumn if you'd like to avoid the lar-
ger crowds yet still enjoy the nice weather.
What to See and Do:
Palmero:
This is Sicily's regional capital, and is full of wonders to behold. Check out the 12 th century
mosaics in the La Martorana church and Capella Palantina. For even more impressive mo-
saics, consider taking the trek up to Monreale where you'll find even more amazing mosaics
on the ceiling. For a taste of art, go to the Palazzo Riso. Here you'll find an impressive array
of contemporary art.
The Greek Temples (Agrigento, Selinunte, and Segesta):
These grand Greek temple complexes are located in western and southern Sicily and rival
even the great historical sights on the isle of Greece itself. The most famous of the temples
is Agrigento, spreading out over a vast amount of land. Two temples are almost complete
and then you'll also see three other that are reconstructed ruins. Selinute is located on the
southern coast. Its ruins are not as well preserved, but the surrounding landscape makes up
for what the ruins are lacking with wildflowers dotting the landscape. Segesta is an unfin-
ished site but features a Doric temple perched atop a hill.
