Pompeii
For those history buff travelers looking to see firsthand how an ancient Roman civilization
once functioned, a trip to the ancient city of Pompeii is a must do. Pompeii was buried in
the ash and soot of Mount Vesuvius on August 24, 79AD. It killed nearly 3,000 people, and
their bodies were preserved exactly how they instantly died that fateful day. Today Pompeii
is an excavation site, and not a very long trip from Naples. It's one of the few sites that have
been preserved with great detail, showing how people lived during that time.
What to See and Do:
The best way to take in all that ancient Pompeii has to offer is to walk the site. The typical
price for an entrance fee runs about $15. Once you enter, you'll be taken back in time and
see what a well planned out city Pompeii truly was. The city is laid out in a grid street plan,
and you'll get a glimpse at ancient aqueducts, homes, and streets, taking you back to a time
when the Roman Empire was going strong. Pompeii is a great place to just roam around and
take in the sights like the amphitheatre, the gymnasium, the House of Vetti, the House of
Faun, and the Temple of Apollo, just to name a few.
Travel Tip: There are actually five archeological sites in the
area. If you're thinking about making a whole day out of exploring
Pompeii then consider buying a ticket that will allow you to visit the
other sites aside from Pompeii as well.
