In-Depth Information
Spello:
Spello is another very small, yet quaint town. Here the roads are very narrow and space is
tight, so you don't see very many cars. Visit the Santa Maria Maggiore where you'll see im-
pressively beautiful frescoes by Pinturicchio, who was an Umbrian artist. Next door you'll
find the Pinacoteca Civica Diocesana, which is a small-town museum with various sculp-
tures and paintings. There's also the option of hiking on nearby Monte Subasio. There's a
marked trail that starts beyond the Bastiglia Hotel.
Travel Tip:
There are a few more small towns in the Umbria re-
gion you can also pass through. They are Spoleto, Norcia, Gubbio,
Todi, and Orvieto. Some are very secluded while others are a bit
more populated. Either way, they all have that Umbrian charm that
will make for an enjoyable stay while you're in the region.
What to Eat:
Just like the region of Umbria itself, the cuisine here is also small town and down to earth.
You'll tend to run across family run establishments, particularly trattorias. Common ingredi-
ents found here include mushrooms, lentils, spelt, truffles, specialty cheeses, and different
types of ham.
If you're passing through or staying in Bevagna, check out Redibis. If its cool ambiance
doesn't impress you, then the delicious food will. Its three dining rooms are part of a former
Roman amphitheatre. While in Assisi, head for the humble, yet rich in taste trattoria of
Palotta. They are famous for their pasta with mushrooms and olives, soup with sweet green
beans, and rabbit stew. The bottom line when looking for places to dine while in Umbria
is to search out those small local gems. You're sure to find great company along with great
food!
Where to Stay:
Staying in Umbria means you'll find plenty of small town inns, bed and breakfasts, and ho-
tels. If there's a particular town you're interested in spending more time in, then chose that
town as your home base and then get out and explore all that the Umbria region has to offer.
A few recommend places to stay would be the Palazzo Bontadosi in Montefalco, Locanda
Palazzone hotel in Orvieto, Palazza Seneca in Norcia, Hotel Palazzo Bocci in Spello, and
Assisi Hostel Le Silve di Armenzano in Assisi.
