Assisi:
Tucked on the slopes Monte Subasio, Assisi is a lovely medieval town that's small (around
25,000 people) and famous for being the birthplace of St. Francis. Assisi is a hilly town, so
keep that in mind if you decide to go in the summer, especially if you decide to explore on
foot. And actually, walking is a great way to see Assisi. You can look at all of the medieval
houses and shops or just roam around the cobblestone streets that will all mostly eventually
leadtothebasilica ofSt.Francis.Onceyoureachthebasilica andgoinside,you'llbetreated
with the beautiful frescoes of the Giotto school all around. The San Rufino Cathedral is also
a must see while in Assisi with its majestic façade and museum. After the cathedral, head
for the Piazza del Comune, which is at the center of town. Here you'll see the Palazzo del
Capitano del Popolo and its clock tower, as well as the impressive church of Santa Maria
Sopra Minerva.

Assisi tends to be one of Italy's most popular places
to pilgrimage since it's the home of St. Francis, so it can be very
busy. However, many tourists tend to just be day-trippers. For a
more enjoyable time, try spending the night in Assisi and get out in
the evening to explore since the streets are much quieter then.
