In-Depth Information
Travel Tip: The line to get into the Vatican Museums
can get extremely long since you can only see the Sistine
Chapel by going through the Museums. It's a good idea to
purchase tickets ahead of time so you won't have to waste
your day standing in line.
Travel Tip: When you finally get to the Sistine Chapel,
expectittobecrowdedwithverylittleroomtomove.Ifyou
tend to be claustrophobic, this may not be a good place for
you to visit. Also, photography and recording videos is pro-
hibited in the chapel.
Castel Sant'Angelo:
This fascinating building was initially intended as a mausoleum for the Emperor Harian
when it was being built between 135 and 139 AD. Eventually, strongholds where built on
top of the mausoleum during the Middle Ages and it was turned into a castle and residence
by the Popes. It was used as a prison until 1870, but now there's a museum inside.
Palazzo di Giustizia:
This impressive building was designed by architect Calderini and was constructed from
1889 to 1911. It's an imposing neo-Renaissance design that was initially used to house the
Italian equivalent of the Supreme Court. It was restored in 1970 and again in 1984 and is
definitely a sight to see when visiting the Vatican area.
More Helpful Travel Tips:
 There is a dress code enforced before being allowed into the
Vatican. Shoulders and knees must be covered. This means no tank
tops, shorts, or short skirts.
 If you're visiting in the summer, it's going to be hot and most
museums and places to visit do not have air conditioning. Bring
plenty of water to drink and dress lightly, but be sure to adhere to
the dress code.
