In-Depth Information
Lake Maggiore:
This pristine mountain lake is located on the south side of the Alps and is a popular tourist
and local destination alike. It's the second largest lake in Italy. It also is a part of Switzerland
as well, which also makes it the largest lake in Switzerland.
A great place to stay while exploring the areas around Lake Maggiore is the resort town of
Stresa. Its central location on the lake gives you the perfect view of everything around you.
Hotels are also readily available here since Stresa tends to cater to tourists. There are a vari-
ety of restaurants and shops here as well as a cable car that takes you up to Monte Mottarone
for a lovely view.
The three islands making up the Borromean Islands are also a great place to explore while
staying around Lake Maggiore. They are Isola Bella, Isola Madre, and Isola Superiore. Isola
Belle or The Beautiful Island, as it translates, is famous for its beautiful terraced pyramid
of gardens. It's also here where you'll find the huge Borromeo Palace. And this palace is
quite impressive, to say the least, with its ornate stucco ceilings, Murano chandeliers, inlaid
dressers, and impressive paintings. On Isola Madre or The Mother Island, you'll find beau-
tiful botanic gardens with majestic peacocks roaming around. There's also a villa there with
eccentric décor and artwork. Finally, there's Isola Superiore, also nicknamed the Biggest Is-
land. You can actually stay at one of the two hotels here and there are also a few restaurants
and tourist shops.
Travel Tip: Tours of the islands are available depending on how
long you'd like to spend there. There are also day trips with a tour
of the Lake Maggiore area as well as the islands with an expert tour
guide.
Wherever you decide to visit in the Piedmont Region of Northern Italy, rest assured you'll
be treated to some beautiful, scenic scenery, amazing cuisine, and hospitable people. It's a
great region for all types of outdoor enthusiast, foodies, and wine tasters alike.
