and between the myomeres at the anal ray bases (Fig. 4a and b). During
metamorphosis the melanophores increase in size and number and also
appear on the dorsal surface of the air bladder and on the head (Fig. 4c-f).
At the end of metamorphosis, the pigmentation becomes denser and the
body becomes opaque (Fig. 4g). The juveniles are a dense greenish-black
in color, grading to silver below (Fig. 4h).
In a study by Sato and Yasuda (1980), larvae of E. hawaiensis captured
in Ishigaki Inland, Japan were maintained in an aquarium at the salinity
and temperature conditions of the collection site and were fed with rotifers,
