Figure 13. Profiles of thyroid hormone receptor gene expression and the whole body
concentrations of thyroxine (T 4 ) and triiodothyronine (T 3 ) in the conger eel ( Conger miriaster ).
The fi gure is redrawn from Kawakami et al. (2003a) with permission but the names of TRbs
were changed according to the proposed re-defi nition of Kawakami et al. (2007).
a different TR type and this may partly explain why it is able to infl uence
various parts of the body simultaneously. In eel metamorphosis, the
hypothalamus—pituitary—thyroid axis is probably regulated principally by
TRβB. Other TRs may be associated with the regulation of gene expression
in various parts of the body, and thereby induce morphological and
biochemical changes.
