Figure 2.2 Nearly.everything.we.depend.on.all.day.long.is.dependent.
on.the.electricity.infrastructure.
Your.alarm.goes.off.in.the.morning..Most.modern.alarm.
clocks.or.clock.radios.these.days.have.some.computer.tech-
nology. inside. of. them. that. stores. your. preferences. for. the.
sound. you. want. to. hear,. or. just. keeps. the. time. correctly..
They.might.also.be.connected.to.your.media.player.so.you.
can. listen. to. tunes. from. your. iPod. or. other. MP3. player..
But. even. beyond. those. obvious. possibilities,. the. electricity.
running. your. alarm. is. entirely. dependent. on. an. infrastruc-
ture. controlled. by. computers.. The. hopefully. uninterrupted.
low. of. electrical. energy. to. your. home. on. which. so. many.
things.depend.is.dependent.on.a.myriad.of.computer.devices.
(Figure 2.2).
Those.computers.are.integral.to.every.step.of.the.electri-
cal.infrastructure:
•. They.control.the.generation.of.electricity.at.the.dams.or.
coal.or.nuclear.power.plants.or.solar.and.wind.forms.
•. They.regulate.the.low.of.electricity.over.and.through.
the.grid.to.maintain.the.proper.levels.of.power.
•. They. communicate. between. the. different. controlling.
mechanisms.in.order.to.coordinate,.monitor,.and.reg-
ulate.the.low.of.electricity.
