3.5 FILE AND PRINT SERVERS
In.most.organizations.of.any.size.all.of.your.ile.and.printer.
services.and.systems.are.stored.in.a.hierarchical.format.on.a.
server.or.servers..Data.stored.on.these.servers.may.include
•. Documents
•. Spreadsheets
•. Presentations
•. Databases
•. Images.(pictures.or.graphics)
•. Video
•. Applications
•. Logs
•. System.iles
•. A.wide.variety.of.other.types.of.information
Archived.e-mail.records.are.sometimes.stored.separately.on.
a.ile.server..It.is.common.practice.for.organizations.to.“map”.a.
section.of.the.ile.server.to.users.for.their.own.data..This.is.often.
called.their.“home”.directory.or.drive..This.area.of.the.server.is.
accessible.only.to.the.user.or.to.a.network.administrator.
Some.organizations.also.map.a.section.of.the.server.with.
a.drive.for.separate.divisions.or.workgroups..This.area.of.the.
server.could.be.accessible.only.to.the.speciic.group.or.divi-
sion.or.to.a.network.administrator.
It. is. also. possible. that. other. “drives”. are. designated. or.
mapped.to.divisions.or.groups.for.special.purposes..However,.
all.of.these.are.simply.areas.on.the.server.that.are.designated.
with.drive.letters.to.help.manage.data.and.to.ensure.that.only.
authorized.users.have.access.to.that.data.
Let's.look.more.closely.at.the.design.of.a.typical.ile.and.
print.server.to.illustrate.this.a.little.more.clearly.
As.stated.above,.a.server.is.simply.a.more.powerful.com-
puter.with.more.storage.capacity.that.serves.a.group.of.net-
worked.computers..From.a.physical.perspective,.this.server.
