Figure 9.34 shows the result of painting away some of the influence so that the ribs don't bulge out when
the arm is lifted. Don't worry if you paint too much influence away, or if you accidentally paint onto the
arm and things go crazy. You can either Ctrl-Z to undo or adjust the weight property up to 1.0 and paint
it back in. To test the deformation, use the R key and rotate the upper arm bone. One other item to
note in the figure: The bones are now represented by sticks. The Display panel of the Armature proper-
ties allows you to change the visualization of the bones. Thus far, we've been using the bones in Octa-
hedral , which is perfect during rig creation when the orientation of bones can be crucial. When working
with weight painting and animating though, it's best to see as much of the mesh as possible. Choosing
Stick mode cuts bone display to the absolute minimum.
