“darkest” regions of the scene, so we
keep it under wraps. When using other
light sources, environment lighting will
tend to flatten things out, reducing the
impact of directional lighting if you turn
it up too high.
Also shared with the previous interior
setup are the overhead and underfloor
buffered shadow spot lamps. They
provide a nice, subtle shadowing on the
floor that can be seen under the table and
chair, and provide some variation to
ceiling illumination if it's visible. The
settings before were fine, and there is no need to change them.

The direct sunlight streaming in the window is accomplished by a spot lamp with a buffered shadow.
Figure 5.31 shows its lamp settings. As we're mimicking the sun again, Falloff has been set to Constant .
(The sun is millions of miles away. While its energy certainly falls off, the length of a room after millions
of miles of space is infinitesimally small, and the falloff across that distance is negligible.) Note, too, how
tightly controlled the cone and Clip Start/Clip End values are. Energy is a product of experimentation and
what looks good. I had started around 1.0, but found that I wasn't able to get the impact and contrast
that I wanted for the direct lighting until it was up to 3.0.
