with a long reach, say across 300 units in your scene, it is probably going to end up grouping many of
those things together into the same distance categories. That would lead to imprecise results. It would be
nice to be able to tell the lamp to ignore anything outside of a certain range, and to use all of its distance
categories for, say, just stuff inside this one room. The Clip Start and Clip End values do this very thing.
Figure 5.15 shows a spot lamp very far away from a room. Note the small line down the center of the
spot cone that begins and ends right outside of the room. This is the indicator for the clip area.
Any objects that the lamp encounters before the start value or after the end value are ignored for the
purpose of shadow creation. The entire range of distances is allocated to the small area between the two,
giving you much better shadow creation accuracy. The panel has “autoclip” buttons, but I don't recom-
