proteins have homologues among bacterial and/or chloroplast proteins. By the application of a
combination of state-of-the-art computer methods it has been possible to identify homologous
genes from the databases and at the same time predict the proteins with probable function. It is the
non-homologous portions that constitute the greatest challenge for gene identity and the proteins
encoded by these sequences. By January, 2011, 59 cyanobacterial genomes have been either fully
or partially sequenced. Amongst these, 39 sequenced genomes are available through scientifi c
publications and 20 are available on the websites of the sequencing Institutes. The 39 fully sequenced
cyanobacterial strains fall into various taxonomic groups (Table 1). The unicellular forms comprise
