Figure 5: Electron micrograph of negative-stained Prochlorococcus Myoviruses P-SSM2 and P-SSM4. Myovirus P-SSM2 with
(A) non-contracted tail and (B) contracted tail, and myovirus P-SSM4 with (C) contracted tail and (D) non-contracted tail. Note
the T4-like capsid, base-plate, and tail structure in both myoviruses. Scale bars indicate 100 nm. With the kind permission of

Figure 6: Taxonomy of best BLASTp hits for P-SSM2 and P-SSM4. Each predicted coding sequence from both phage genomes
was used as a query against the nonredundant database to identify the taxon of the best hit. Blue slices indicate phage hits,
while yellow slices indicate cellular hits. With the kind permission of S. W. Chisholm, Department of Biology, Massachusetts

genome has 540 ORFs, nearly half of which could not be assigned any function (nearly 54%). This
podophage possesses 31% of the translated ORFs similar to T7 phage encoded proteins and 4% typical
for it. There are 11% of the proteins synthesized that are similar to cyanobacterial (7%) and bacterial
proteins (4%) (Fig. 7 B). P-SSP7 has 16 genes common with the 26 core genes identifi ed for T7. These
relate to shut-down of host transcription, initiation of phage gene transcription, degradation of host
