The Shadow Copies tab
When you enable shadow copies on a volume, Windows warns you that the default settings
aren't appropriate for heavily used servers and recommends configuring the settings manually.
The most important setting is the location of shadow copies. By default, Windows allocates
space on the same volume where shadow copies are enabled. On servers with a lot of shared files
that are accessed and changed frequently, this default setting might not be ideal because of the
additional load shadow copies place on the disk system. Volumes used heavily for sharing files
should be configured to use a different volume for storing shadow copies—one that doesn't have
shadow copies enabled. If you want to change the default volume, you should do so in the
Settings dialog box (see Figure 6-5) before enabling shadow copies. Otherwise, you have to dis-
able shadow copies, change the storage volume, and reenable shadow copies.
