Final Words
Learning is a journey and not a destination. This topic and its predecessor were never intended to
be a collection of pre-digested facts about game development, but active journeys that allow you
to form your own understanding through engaging projects. We hope that accompanying us on
our latest journey has achieved just that; perhaps challenging some of your existing ideas about
game development and hopefully introducing some new ones, too.
One of the exciting things about this field is that it is continually evolving and advancing,
which means that the journey never ends. There is certainly plenty left to discover in Game
Maker, too. We would love to tell you more about data-driven approaches, hierarchical
animation, particle effects, external DLLs, blend modes, drawing surfaces, and many others, but
these will have to wait. Nonetheless, we hope that your own journey will not end here and that
you are brimming with ideas for changing, adding to, and improving the example games in this
book. We would encourage you to do just that and we would love to see the results on the
YoYoGames web site. The Game Maker's Companion may have led you through this particular
journey, but the path ahead is now entirely up to you.
