In-Depth Information
Bigger Story
The characters so far have been mainly serving the immediate needs of game play, rather than
developing the bigger story. We have an opportunity to elaborate a bit on the main characters as
well since Archie and Flynn are always around. This is the trial and tribulation part of the story,
and at this stage, Flynn is still learning who he is and what he can do (represented nicely in a
practical sense, as he is still learning new moves). He has almost solved the riddle of finding his
mother, so he must be starting to worry about what he is going to find.
Mary
Flynn will be nervous about meeting his mother for the first time. We can bring this to the
player's attention by letting Flynn bump into reminders of Mary—reminders that show us that
she is indeed a pirate, and a pretty fierce one. We could have a 'wanted' poster of Mary, to affirm
her status as a part of this underworld (pasted up before the Pirate King captured her). Flynn
already knows that she is a pirate, but would probably be happy to forget it. Pirates might be
awesome in theory, but would you want one as your mother?
Wanted Poster
Wanted!
Dead or alive,
Preferably dead:
Mary Jones.
Distinctive features:
Deadly temper and annoying parrot.
Archie comments: Bah! Annoying temper and deadly parrot more like.
Archibald
We should also be giving the player some clues here as to the trickster, Archie. We will
foreshadow that he might not be all that nice. Archie drops comments about how great it was to
roam the seas with Mary, instilling fear in everyone. Flynn's responses will always be less than
enthusiastic, as he has not made up his mind about his Mom yet. Archie can also show a bit of
his true nature while we are interacting with the less-important NPCs. He is inclined to not
believe anyone is telling the truth and happy to let the prisoners rot in their cages.
