Archetype: Shapeshifter
Mary is a classic shapeshifter. At the start of our story, Flynn isn't sure whether she is good or not.
She left him as a baby, so she must be bad, mustn't she? But as he gets to know her, he realizes
that it isn't that simple; life rarely is. Mary loves Flynn and has only his best interests at heart, but
she has her own ideas about what is best for Flynn, which might be very different from what he
wants himself.
Even at the very end, Flynn doesn't know whether Mary will stay.
The Parrot Archibald
The parrot (Figure 9-4) is an extraordinarily clever bird. He speaks, often and loudly. Getting
nowhere with Mary, the Pirate King started torturing Archie. He caved in immediately and told
the King all about Ben and Flynn on the little island. The King believes that Flynn will be valuable
as leverage and sends Archie on pain of death to bring him back. Archie agrees, not only to free
Mary and his own feathers, but because he thinks it will serve his purpose. If the Pirate King
should happen to kill Flynn, then there is no reason for Mary to return to the island and settle
down.

The bird isn't actually evil; he just serves his own interests first and foremost. He loved his life
as Mary's pirate parrot and is happiest when there is adventure around. Settling down on a little
island would not suit him at all. But he never expected that he would start to care for the island
boy he is sending into danger.
The parrot spans a number of roles, being a very useful guide and tool throughout the game.
Archetype: Herald, Mentor, Trickster
Archie is extremely useful in our story and takes on many different roles as we go through the
story. First, he is the herald bringing the news that Mary is held captive; next, he takes on the role
as mentor and guides Flynn through most of the game. He is the one informing Flynn of almost
everything he needs to know along the way. He also teaches Flynn new moves.
