In-Depth Information
Archetype: Mentor
Ben acts as a mentor in our story. He gives Flynn information about his mother and some good
advice. He serves as a threshold guardian as well, as he is afraid for Flynn and doesn't want to let
him go. He is the one who really voices concern in the stage “Refusal to the Call.”
Mother
Mary (Figure 9-3) has always been a wild girl. She has always done exactly what she wanted. She
stole the Pirate King's treasure, got caught, and ran her ship aground while fleeing. She seduced
the local shipwright, Ben, to get him to fix her ship, meanwhile hiding her treasure and keeping it
from him.
Figure 9-3. Mary, pirate and reluctant mother.
She hadn't planned on actually falling in love. She never liked the prospect of settling down
on a small boring island, but in fact she would have done it, were it not for the threat of the Pirate
King. She chose to travel on to keep Ben and her baby son safe, but the decision gnaws at her
conscience. She never told Ben why she left, and often wonders whether there could have been
another way. She has been dreaming for a long time about returning to the island.
Flynn doesn't quite know how to trust her, especially since she has abandoned him before
and he learns that she once worked for the Pirate King.
