Ice-Covered Lakes Environment
Saimaa ringed seal ( Pusa hispida saimensis ) in Lake Saimaa, Finland. Seals are very rarely seen in
lake environments. After the last ice age the Baltic Sea evolved through several phases where, due to
land upheaval, lakes with their ringed seal population were separated from marine
into freshwater basins. These relicts are still found from lakes Saimaa and Ladoga.
