sTUDY aRea
The study focuses on the island of Tenerife, specifi-
cally in the provincial capital where there are 221,
956 inhabitants, ine (2009).
however our study will focus on the urban area
of the municipality, where the population density
is much higher than in rural areas. The city cov-
ers a total of 22.06% of the inhabitants of the
province, of which 48.14% are men and 52.86%
women. of all of them a 60.17% are part of the
workforce leaving the rest as pensioners, students
and unemployed (the latter percentage is high due
to the economic crisis we are experiencing) ine
(2009).
although the construction sector has
demanded large numbers of staff in recent years,
most of the island's workers are engaged in work
under the services sector because the island's
economic engine is tourism. The abandonment
of the traditionally productive work such as
agriculture and livestock, even industry, gives
more importance to the construction. This, in
addition to generating wealth, should give the
public efficient infrastructure to meet the needs
of citizens.
The island of Tenerife, with an area of 2058 km 2 ,
is the largest of the canary islands, which occu-
pies a central position. it rises about 8 km above
the abyssal plain ocean and reaches a height above
sea level of 3,718 meters, Teide Mountain, (Ridley,
1971).
The growth of the island has taken place by
the accumulation of volcanic materials through a
process that lasted several tens of millions of years
and has continued to the present. The ascent and
emission of magma has focused on bands, known
as structural axes or ridges, which converge in the
center of the island at angles of 120°. The erosive

unconformities created allow to group volcanic
materials in units called series, which correspond
roughly whit large volcanic polygenic edifices
(Ridley, 1971).
