from antivirus, to backup demons, to SVN. Notably, these all happen in envi-
ronments outside the direct reach of the software vendor. The same use case
which runs brilliantly in one configuration fails notoriously in another.
The definition of performance in this case is what the user considers good
or bad. The anecdote of adding a progress bar when the performance is poor
becomes a painful reality. However, users have a pretty clear idea of what to
expect from the system in terms of performance. Qualitative and quantitative
surveys are used to define good or bad performance of user actions, and these
become the benchmark of any performance improvements and continuously
monitoring that performance does not deteriorate.
20.7 Conclusion
The aim of this section was to show that HDF5 can be used in industrial
HPC applications effectively, respecting the requirements that force imple-
mentations not to use special arrangements and custom-made solutions based
on a particular computational site. Despite the shortcomings, the HDF5 for-
mat and library have the potential to improve their market position in the
area of black box, low-risk, and conservative software applications. The opti-
mistic bottom line is that in the end, it works. HDF5 format is possible to
use in such industrial use cases effectively and eciently. The HDF5 library
offers the knobs and open ends to adjust it for the different uses.
