An HDF5 dataset's dataspace describes the number of dimensions of the
array (or its \rank") and can range in dimensionality from 0 dimensions (a sin-
gle element) up to 32 dimensions. Each dimension can be a fixed or unlimited
size, and unlimited dimensions allow any edge of the array to be expanded.
