10.2.12 Features under Development
Version 3 of OrangeFS is underway after a decade of development and
support for v2. The primary goal for v3 is to support scaling to a much larger
number of servers and clients, to support direct interaction of file systems
at different locations, and to provide much richer management features for
support personnel. Version 3 will support several key items:
extensive and flexible replication of objects,
hierarchical storage management,
flexibility to add and remove servers as needed,
using the metadata engine to reference remote objects, and
a powerful asynchronous management tool framework.
These features all reflect the realization that the object handle model im-
plemented in v2 is no longer adequate. Version 2 requires that each server and
client is aware of every server in the file system, and exactly which objects
are stored on each. This is accomplished by distributing a static configuration
file to each client on start-up. Version 3 is changing this model. Each object
no longer has a single copy. A specific server no longer has the object. Servers
