Describe the geographic orientation (compass direc-
tion) of the faults shown in Figure 7.1.
Figure 7.1 shows and names many of the major faults
in this area. Figure 7.2 shows the distribution of earth-
quakes along the San Andreas Fault before and imme-
diately after the Loma Prieta earthquake. Figure 7.3
shows the distribution of the aftershocks of the Loma
Prieta earthquake in map view and cross section. Use
these figures to answer the following questions.
b. What is the large-scale geological process that is occur-
ring in this part of California that accounts for fault orien-
tation and motion?
