In the center of this square you will see “The Waag” (“the weight house”). Originally a
city gate and part of the medieval walls of Amsterdam, this building was used in the 17th
century as a public space where goods were weighed (a number of guilds were housed on
top floors). The Waag is represented in Rembrandt's “The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes
Tulp” painting (1632).
This square is a good spot to have a break or sit on a terrace to do some people watching.
