19. Amsterdam Museum
Amsterdam is one of the most interesting cities in the world, and with that, so is its history.
The Amsterdam Museum is dedicated to preserving that history through the cataloging and
capture, by way of art, photography and physical objects, of its social and evolution through
the ages.
The museum opened up at the beginning of the 21st century in the same building that was
once home to a monastery and later a city-run orphanage (the orphanage opened up in the
16th century and stayed open into the 20th century).
The museum collection boasts close to 70,000 pieces. Pieces in the collection include a
myriad of items from paintings to maps as well as objects dating back to the Middle Ages.
Additionally, a section displaying objects from the orphanage give visitors a sense of how
the children lived during the 300 years it was running. A small part of the original orphanage
is still intact and open to visitors.
