18. Begijnhof
Located in central Amsterdam in a green, leafy oasis amongst the hustle and bustle of the
city life is Begijnhof. A narrow pathway will lead you to a wooden door, and behind this
door is a lovely courtyard surrounded by some of the oldest buildings in Amsterdam.
The Begijnhof buildings date back to the 14th century although they have gone through sev-
eral facelifts which has resulted in the elimination of the original Gothic fronts.
These buildings were at one time charity housing for a group of women calling themselves
the Beguines. The women were not married, the common vow of chastity brought them to-
gether to live in the Begijnhof charity buildings.
