Gudamj) French-managed company that offers horse trips around the country. Quality
saddles, horse tack and equipment are available. Very competitive rates. The office is be-
hind the State Department Store but you need to call to make an appointment as there is
often no one there.
Hovsgol Travel Company ( 9911 5771, 11-460 368; www.hovsgoltravel.com ; PO Box
2003, Namyanjugiin Gudamj) Runs countrywide tours but specialises in boat and horse
trips around Khövsgöl. Operates the popular Camp Toilogt at Khövsgöl Nuur. Works with
the Taimen Conservation Fund as a responsible fishing outfitter. Also sponsors the annual
100km ultramarathon at Khövsgöl.
Juulchin ( 11-328 425, 11-328 428; www.juulchin.com ; Olympiin Örgön Chölöö) Mon-
golia's oldest tour operator, Juulchin has been in business since the 1950s. It offers
15-day group tours departing on six different dates each summer. Well-regarded for its ex-
perienced staff and good-quality vehicles. The office is east of the Japanese Embassy, in
the same building the KIA dealership.
Karakorum Expeditions ( 11-315 655, 11-320 182; www.gomongolia.com ; PO Box
542) A leader in bike, hiking and mountaineering tours in western Mongolia, this is a good
outfit if you want to climb Tavan Bogd. Runs a unique trip with snow leopard researchers.
Owner Graham Taylor is an experienced mountaineer and runs some of the trips.
Khövsgöl Lodge Company ( 9911 5929; www.boojum.com ; Sükhbaatar District, Bldg
33, Room 16) This experienced outfit is part of the US-based Boojum Expeditions and
has been running trips in Mongolia since 1994. It offers countrywide tours but is particu-
larly experienced in the Darkhad valley and Khövsgöl region. Good for horse treks in
northern Mongolia. The office is in an apartment block behind the Drama Theatre, but you
are better off calling first to get someone to meet you.
Mongolia Expeditions ( 9909 6911, 11-329 279; www.mongolia-expeditions.com ;
Jamyn Gunii Gudamj 5-2) Specialises in adventure travel, including cycle touring, moun-
taineering, caving and rafting trips, as well as less vigorous options such as birdwatching
tours. This is a good option if you are planning a climbing trip to Tavan Bogd or if you want
to do a tour by bike. Sponsors the Mongolia Bike Challenge.
Nomadic Expeditions ( 11-313 396; www.threecamellodge.com ; Peace Ave 76) This
is the Mongolian office of the US-based travel company. Runs countrywide tours but is es-
pecially good for the Gobi, where it runs the excellent Three Camel Lodge. A leader in en-
vironmental conservation and work with Mongolian scientists to protect plant and animal
species in the Gobi.
