DIRECT TRAIN
Most travellers catch the direct train between Bĕijīng and Ulaanbaatar.

There are two direct trains a week each way between Bĕijīng and Ulaanbaatar. One of
these (K3 and 4) is the Trans-Mongolian Railway (

, which runs between Bĕijīng
and Moscow. It's easier to get a ticket for the other train (K23 and 24).

The K23 changes its departure day each year (depending on whether it's run by China
or Mongolia railways). The Chinese train typically departs Bĕijīng on Tuesday, while the
Mongolian train typically departs Bĕijīng on Saturday. Note that the Chinese and Mongoli-
ans switch operating duties in May.

The K23 summer train is an extra train put on for the summer holiday season (it usually
runs mid-June to early October). When operated by Mongolia it will most likely depart
Bĕijīng on a Monday, when run by China it will most likely depart Bĕijīng on Saturday.

Train K23 passes through Dàtóng at approximately 2.15pm, Jíníng at 4.15pm, Èrlián at
8.45pm and Zamyn-Üüd at 11.45pm.

It is also possible to travel directly between Ulaanbaatar and Hohhot twice a week, al-
lowing you to either bypass Bĕijīng completely or catch a train or flight (Y630) on to
Bĕijīng from there.

Trains leave from
Bĕijīng Train Station
( 8610-5101 9999). If your luggage weighs
more than 35kg, on the day before departure you'll have to take it to the Luggage Ship-
ment Office, which is on the right-hand side of the station. The excess is charged at about
US$11 per 10kg, with a maximum excess of 40kg allowed.
