Tickets
Airfares to Mongolia peak between June and August. Overlanders should consider pur-
chasing an open-jaw ticket. This option could involve, for example, flying into Bĕijīng and
then flying out of Moscow. This allows you to travel slowly along the Trans-Siberia Rail-
way.
Flights, tours and rail tickets can be booked online at lonelyplanet.com/bookings .
CLIMATE CHANGE & TRAVEL
Every form of transport that relies on carbon-based fuel generates CO2, the main
cause of human-induced climate change. Modern travel is dependent on aero-
planes, which might use less fuel per kilometre per person than most cars but
travel much greater distances. The altitude at which aircraft emit gases (including
CO2) and particles also contributes to their climate change impact. Many websites
offer 'carbon calculators' that allow people to estimate the carbon emissions gen-
erated by their journey and, for those who wish to do so, to off set the impact of the
greenhouse gases emitted with contributions to portfolios of climate-friendly initi-
atives throughout the world. Lonely Planet off sets the carbon footprint of all staff
and author travel.

China
There are two border points open to foreigners, the main one being between Zamyn-Üüd
and Èrlián (Ereen).
ZAMYN-ÜÜD-ÈRLIÁN (EREEN) BORDER CROSSING
Most travellers end up in Èrlián in the middle of the night on the international through
train. Zamyn-Üüd, on the Mongolian side, is not an interesting place, so you aren't miss-
ing anything if you are on the overnight train. For more info Click here .
Opening hours The Zamyn-Üüd-Èrlián crossing is open daily but note that on holidays
only the train (not the road) crossing will operate. For vehicles the border is open 8am to
6pm.
Processing Mongolian customs and immigration officials take about two hours to do their
stuff.
Walking It's not possible to walk across the border.
