In-Depth Information
This hilltop near the river and just to the north of the main street features a pavilion, nine
stupas and the concrete likenesses of an elk, ibex and argali sheep. The views from the
top are good. To the northeast, 1.6km away, you can just make out the ruined remains of
the once-walled Manchu military garrison (GPS: N 47°44.922', E 96°52.198') , between the
river and the distant hills. You can walk to the ruins across the grassy meadow in about
20 minutes. There's little to see, but it's a pleasant stroll.

( 9811 2507, 9946 0506; enkh_tuya5@yahoo.com ) Tuya, who owns the Chigistei Restaurant
and speaks some English, can also help organise tours, including hiking and horse trek-
ing in the Otgon Tenger Uul Strictly Protected Area. She can arrange transport (US$80
per day per jeep), guides (US$40 to US$50 per day) and horses (US$20 per day, plus the
same again for a horse guide). She particularly recommends the seven-day hike or horse
trek from Uliastai to Dayan Mountain and back.
Sleeping
The grassy meadow leading towards the ruined Manchu military garrison is great for
camping. For some truly gorgeous camping spots, though, follow Chigistei Gol out of
town for around 5km to 10km along the lush valley that eventually leads to Otgon
Tenger Uul Strictly Protected area.
