In-Depth Information
cook to come along too. You'll have to bring your own food and camping equipment, al-
though water is plentiful here. Dash can also help arrange a car transfer, to or from
Ulaangom, for example, for around T50,000 to T60,000 per day plus petrol.
Dash doesn't speak English, but is very experienced. His son, Shinee ( 9949 3110) , a
university student in Khovd, does speak English, though, and is usually around to help
out during the summer holidays. He also works as a guide.
Getting There & Away
Shared minivans between Ulaangom and Tarialan cost around T4000 per person, al-
though if you've come here for hiking it wouldn't be out of the question to walk to Tari-
alan from Ulaangom.

Khökh Nuur
This pretty alpine lake (Blue Lake; GPS: N 49°50.413', E 91°41.141') is surrounded by moun-
tains and makes a great destination on foot or horse from Tarialan; the trip is about 15km
up Davaan Uliastai (one valley north of the Kharkhiraa Gol).
It's possible for a car to reach the lake in a very roundabout manner (120km), although
only an experienced driver could do it. The road route involves driving up Ulaan Davaa
(from Ulaangom), sweeping around the mountains close to Üüreg Nuur, and then head-
ing southeast.
Trekkers can continue from the lake for 25km to the glacier-wrapped Türgen Uul. The
walk takes about two days through a harsh landscape of prairie, mountains, glaciers and
rivers, but the topography is wide open so it's fairly easy to navigate. There are good
camping spots (GPS: N 49°42.485', E 91°29.525') along the Türgen Gol, near the northern
base of Türgen Uul.

Uvsiin Khar Us Nuur
Another freshwater lake in the region is Uvsiin Khar Us Nuur (literally 'Khar Us Nuur of
Uvs Aimag' to distinguish it from the more famous lake of the same name in Khovd).
You can swim and fish here, and it makes a logical camping spot if travelling between
Ulaangom and Khovd City. The lake is 102km south of Ulaangom.
