Getting There & Away
AIR
Mongolian Airlines MAP ( 7043 8889; www.hunnuair.com ; Buyant Hotel; 9am-6pm
Mon-Sat) , now known as Hunnu Air but at the time of research still operating in Khovd
under its old name, has a ticket office in the lobby of Buyant Hotel, and flies to UB (from
T270,000 one way) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The airport is 5km south of the
city.
BUS
Once a day a bus leaves for the two-day, nonstop trek to Ulaanbaatar (T65,000, 1425km)
via Altai (T30,000, 15 hours, 424km) and Bayankhongor (T50,000, 28 hours, 795km).
Buy your tickets in advance from the green railway carriage that serves as the bus sta-
tion .
MINIVAN & JEEP
Minivans leave from the shared-jeep stand near the market for Ölgii (T15,000 to
T20,000, six to seven hours, 238km) and Ulaangom (T18,000, seven to eight hours,
238km) if enough passengers show up (usually around four to eight hours after any sug-
gested departure time).
Tickets for the daily Ulaanbaatar-bound minivan (T65,000, 45 hours) are sold in ad-
vance at the 'bus station'.
Jeeps cost around T500 per kilometre, including petrol, around town. Shared jeeps for
local sums leave from the local jeep stand behind the market.
Marima, at Khovd Handicraft & Tours ( Click here ) , can also help travellers arrange
local taxi rides.
If demand warrants it, there is usually a shared jeep or minivan that leaves from the
south side of the market every afternoon for Bulgan (T30,000 per person, 10 to 12
hours), from where you cross the border into Xinjiang province in China. See Click here
for more details.
