Sleeping & Eating
There is no official accommodation in the park but during summer, Tuvan and Kazakh
families (per person T10,000) will often host trekkers and may even supply a hot meal, al-
though you will need to bring your own sleeping bag. Besides camping, the only other
option is the small, unofficial and overpriced Aksu Rashan Suvlal ( 9942 2979; ger
with/without meals US$25/20, tent site US$10) , a ger camp set up by a local entrepreneur at
the Rashany Ikh Uul Hot Springs, 25km northwest of Khoton Nuur.
The best camping spots are around the lakes. Dayan Nuur has some nasty mosquitoes
but the other two lakes are largely bug-free. Be aware that unattended tents are some-
times robbed.
At Syrgal (GPS: N 48°36.004', E 88°26.672') , between the lakes, there are a couple of very
basic shops selling sweets, vodka, water and little else.

MAPS
Kazakh Tour ( Click here ) sells the excellent satellite map Altai Tavan Bogd National
Park Map & Guide published by Conservation Ink ( www.conservationink.org ) for T15,000
and topographic 1:500,000 maps for T18,000.
PERMITS
Border permits are required to enter the park and can be obtained in Ulaanbaatar ( Click
here ) or at the Border Patrol office (Khiliin Tserenk Alb; 01422-22341; 8-11am & 2-5pm
Mon-Fri) in Ölgii. The permit costs T5000 and is good for an entire group provided the
group does not separate mid-trek. The border patrol office will only deal with Mongoli-
ans so you'll need a local, your guide or a tour agency in Ölgii to apply on your behalf.
Border guards at Dayan Nuur, Tavan Bogd base camp, Aral Tolgoi (western end of
Khoton Nuur) and Syrgal (the point where Khoton Nuur meets Khurgan Nuur) will all
ask to see your paperwork (photocopies are not accepted), and those without permits are
fined US$150 and charged costs for the army to return them to Ölgii (around US$170).
If you approach the region from the north, you will have to purchase another military
permit (T10,000) from the Tsagaannuur border patrol.
Fishing permits cost T500 per day, although in practise nobody seems to need them, or
be able to get them.
