Getting There & Away
AIR
Hunnu Air ( 7044 2244; www.hunnuair.com/en ; Bayankhongor Store, ground fl; 9am-6pm
Mon-Fri) , formerly Mongolian Airlines, flies to Ulaanbaatar several times a week, check
the website for details. Fares are T150,000 to T250,000 one way. The office is inside Go-
lomt Bank on the ground floor of the large Bayankhongor Store. The airport is about
1km south of the city.
BUS
Buses leaves for Ulaanbaatar (T28,000, 15 hours, 630km) via Arvaikheer (same price,
five hours, 200km) at 8am, 2pm and 6pm. Buy tickets the day before if you can.
JEEP & MINIVAN
Shared minivans leave from the bus stand for Ulaanbaatar (T32,000) throughout the day,
but most commonly just after the evening bus has left. You should also be able to catch a
shared minivan to Altai (T36,000, 12 hours) most days, from where you can find onward
transport to Khovd.
Shared vehicles also hang around outside the Black Market.
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
EXPLORING THE GOBI
If you fancy yourself a bit of an Indiana Jones then you'll love the desert around
Bayangovi. Few travellers make it this far and any DIY explorers need to carry
plenty of water, fuel and spare parts for their 4WD vehicle. The area around Kher-
men Tsav is particularly barren and as water is extremely scarce, virtually no one
lives here. A minimum of two vehicles and an experienced guide is recommended
for this area.
