In-Depth Information
A further 22km northeast of Bayanzag is an area of sand dunes called Moltzog Els ,
which might be worth a visit if you're not planning to visit Khongoryn Els. Bayanzag is
around 90km from Dalanzadgad.
Sleeping & Eating
Camping opportunities abound - the zag (scrub) forest, 5km from the cliffs, is one option
- although water is scarce, so you may want to enlist the help of nomadic families come
mealtime. Expect to pay them T5000 per meal. You can also camp for free at any of the
tourist ger camps, then pay to use their facilities; showers, restaurant etc.
Sainzaya's Family Ger GUEST GER$
( 9822 0218; GPS: N 44°11.362', E 103°41.200'; per person T7000, meals T5000) There's a nice
family atmosphere at the home of Sainzaya. She cooks tasty meals and the guest gers are
basic but comfortable. No shower and only an outhouse toilet. No English spoken. Her
gers are around 6km from the cliffs. Other members of her family, as well as other famil-
ies, also have guest gers nearby.
Geleg-Araash's Family Ger GUEST GER$
( 9860 3335; GPS: N 44°10.806', E 103°41.478'; per person T7000, meals T5000) Geleg-Araash,
the father of Sainzaya from Sainzaya's Family Ger, has his basic gers 1km closer to the
cliffs. His wife cooks the meals.
Jamian Family Ger GUEST GER$
( 9822 0998; GPS: N 44°10.268', E 103°41.693'; per person T7000, meals T5000; ) Close to
the cliffs (4km away) is the family ger of Jamian who can arrange camel rides (per hour/
day T7000/25,000, plus the same again for the guide), including multiday treks such as
the two-day round trip to Moltzog Els, or the five-day one-way trek to Khongoryn Els.
You'll have to bring all your own supplies and camping equipment, though.
Bayanzag Tourist Camp TOURIST GER CAMP$
( 9953 8899; www.gobitour.mn ; GPS: N 44°10.466', E 103°41.816'; ger bed T15,000; ) This
old- fashioned, rather rundown camp offers a cheaper ger-camp option. Nonguests can
use the showers (T3000) and eat in the undeniably tacky, giant tortoise-shaped restaurant
(mains T4000 to T5000). It's by the scrub 'forest', a 4km-walk below the cliffs.
