In-Depth Information
Khongoryn Els
Within walking distance of the dunes, along their northern edge, you'll find two tourist
ger camps and a number of guest gers run by nomadic families. Some remain open until
mid-October.
Ganbold Delger GUEST GER$
( 9864 8184; GPS: N 43°46.297', E 102°21.289'; per person with/without meals T21,000/10,000;
) Ganbold, a local herdsman, runs one of the more popular guest ger outfits. You'll see
his home to your left (east) as you approach the dunes from the north (which is the way
most people come). Accommodation in the guest gers is basic, and Ganbold doesn't
speak English, but this is a reliable place. Camel rides cost T30,000 per day, plus
T20,000 for a guide and his camel. Only about 2km walk from the dunes, but at least a
12km-hike northeast of the tallest dunes.
Ulziibat's Family Ger GUEST GER$
( 9648 1214, 9701 1697; GPS: N 43°46.614', E 102°17.312'; per bed T7000, meals T5000) Run by
local camel herder Ulziibat, guest gers here are basic but comfortable. Meals are avail-
able and camel riding is, of course, on offer (per hour T7000). About 2km from the
dunes, not far from Gobi Discovery 2 ger camp, but around 8km northeast of the tallest
dunes.
Nyamsuren's Family Ger GUEST GER$
( 5318 0356; GPS: N 43°47.631', E 102°12.141'; per bed T7000, meals T4000) One of the family
gers closest to the tallest dunes (just 1km away), Nyamsuren and his family offer home
cooking as well as a couple of basic guest gers.

though offering much the same, Gobi Discovery 2 is a sound choice, 2km from the dunes
(10km from the tallest section). Nonguests can use the showers (T9000) and the restaur-
ant and bar (meals around US$15). Some staff speak English, and camel treks can be or-
