LUXURY DESERT DIGS
An ever-growing number of high-end ger camps in this part of Mongolia, means
you don't have to rough it if you want to stay in the Gobi Desert. There are dozens
within shouting distance of Dalanzadgad and Bayanzag. A couple of them have
taken things to a new level.
Three Camel Lodge ( 9888 0930, 11-313 396; www.threecamellodge.com ; GPS: N
43°53.603', E 103°44.435'; ger per person with/without meals T431,000/315,000, lux
T415,000/299,000; Apr-Nov; ) A veritable oasis in the desert 66km northwest of
Dalanzadgad (on the route towards Khongoryn Els) and 28km south of Bayanzag,
Three Camels sets the bar for the Mongolian ger camp experience. Visitors stay in
luxurious gers, some of which step down into a side room with private toilet and
sink (there's a modern shower block too). The restaurant-bar area is made from
wood beams and local granite and is finished tastefully with Chinese-style up-
turned eaves. There's plenty of terraced seating with spectacular views over a
great, grassy plain, and there's a bundle of activities on offer, including camel rides
(per hour/day T28,000/86,000), mountain biking (T14,000/57,000), sand board-
ing (half/full day T14,000/28,000), Mongolian cooking classes (T28,000) and
massage (T60,000 to T90,000).
Dream Gobi Camp ( 9890 5074, 11-315 379; dreamgobicamp@yahoo.com ; GPS: N
43°54.458', E 103°51.999'; ger per person with breakfast/3 meals US$100/134) Has none of
the class of Three Camel Lodge, but the facilities here are a notch above most oth-
er ger camps, not least because this is the only camp in the Gobi where every ger
has an attached bathroom with hot shower. The large, raised, central wooden 'ger',
which all the real gers fan out from, contains a bright and clean restaurant-bar area
from where you can view the glass-walled kitchen as well as the surrounding
desert. The camp is on the main route between Bayanzag (28km) and Dalanza-
dgad (60km).
Goviin Bayanburd 1 ( 9901 3017, 9595 3012; gobioasis_mn@yahoo.com ; GPS: N
43°36.931', E 104°19.233'; ger with/without meals US$60/25, VIP r with meals US$250) The
ger accommodation in this well-run camp, 10km north of Dalanzadgad (and only
5km from the airport), is smart but nothing special, but the 20 VIP rooms, which
were in the process of being built when we were here, promise quality furnishings
and en-suite bathrooms. Anna, the manager, speaks very good English. They have
another camp, Goviin Bayanburd 2 ( 9953 2020; GPS: N 44°09.754', E 103°40.634';
ger with/without meals US$50/20) , 5km northwest of the 'Flaming Cliffs' at Bayanzag.
