The Gobi Highlights
Take one step forward and slide three steps back on the awesome sand dunes of
Khongoryn Els ( Click here ) .
Go fossil hunting at Bayanzag ( Click here ), the beautiful 'flaming cliffs', rich in di-
nosaur bones and fossil eggs.
Look out for ibexes as you trek through the ice-filled canyon of Yolyn Am ( Click
here ) , with vultures soaring above.
Camp by the river before picking your way through the monastery ruins of Ongiin
Khiid ( Click here ) .
Shimmy up a granite face or just clamber over boulders in the eerie, moonscape-
like Ikh Gazryn Chuluu ( Click here ).
Search for the Khavtsgait Petroglyphs ( Click here ) ; remote, prehistoric rock
carvings that overlook the desert.
Get truly off the beaten track and venture south to Khermen Tsav ( Click here ), a
canyon some insist is more spectacular than Bayanzag.
Getting There & Away
There are plenty of shared minivans and jeeps, as well as the (normally) daily public
buses, heading from Ulaanbaatar (UB) to all the Gobi aimag (province) capitals. Remem-
ber the travel times given are indicative only and don't take into account breakdowns and
time spent in guanz (canteens) drinking airag (fermented mare milk) and watching sumo.
Flying is also an option to Dalanzadgad, Altai and Bayankhongor. If you are travelling
