In-Depth Information
travel north along the Kherlen Gol. Foreigners may only travel as far as the foot of
the mountain as they are not allowed to climb it and there are plans to create an
observation route to make their visit worthwhile.
Around 22km due north of Burkhan Khalduun (as the falcon flies) is Khalun Us
Rashant (Hot Water Springs; GPS: N 48°57.206', E 109°00.217') . The site has more than a dozen
hot springs, a collection of log bathhouses and a small Buddhist temple (built in
honour of Zanabazar, who frequented the site).
In warmer months, coming on horseback from Batshireet is your best bet. (It's
also possible to drive there in winter when the ground freezes.)
Festivals
Dadal is a great place to be for Naadam (11 and 12 July). You can get up close and per-
sonal with the archers and jockeys, and perhaps make up the numbers in the wrestling
tourney!
Sleeping & Eating
This is perfect camping country, so just find a secluded spot away from the village. There
are also two brand new ger camps near the Chinggis Khaan obelisk. Dadal has a few
guanz (canteens/restaurants) of comparable quality that serve up hot soup and goulash.

person about T10,000; ) Dorjsuren, a friendly retired Buriat, has a small log cabin for
guests next to his home, consisting of a rather cramped but tidy dorm and a hot-water
shower block (T2000). There's a cast-iron stove for cooking and Dorjsuren can provide a
breakfast of tea, homemade bread and clotted cream (and wild strawberry jam in sum-
mer!) for T3000. It is a 10-minute walk southeast of the centre, across the river, but there
is no sign, so ask for directions from the Telecom office. Dorjsuren can arrange horse rid-
ing, ice-fishing in winter and other activities.
