Deluun Boldog
MONUMENT
About 3.5km north of Dadal village is a collection of hills known as Deluun Boldog. On
top of one of the hills is a
stone marker
(GPS: N 49°03.155', E 111°38.590')
, erected in 1990
to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the writing of
The Secret History of the Mon-
gols
. The inscription says that Chinggis Khaan was born here in 1162. Behind it is a large
ovoo
emitting a pungent smell thanks to all the food offerings.
Hunting Museum
MUSEUM
(admission T2000)
For an offbeat adventure, drop by the home of Zundoi-Davag, a
96-year-old hunter who will be happy to show you his contribution to the demise of en-
dangered species, such as the snow leopard and the wolverine, sitting cheek by jowl in
the large barn. He may also regale you with hunting stories and show off his impressive
collection of antique guns. His
summer camp
(ger) is about 5km northwest of Dadal, lit-
erally over the hill and through the woods. A local should be able to take you there on
horseback, motorbike (T5000) or jeep (T10,000).
Chinggis Khaan Obelisk
MONUMENT
This enormous, wedge-shaped white rock was placed in the middle of the Gurvan Nuur
holiday camp in 1962 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of Chinggis' birth. This
was at the height of the communist era, though somehow the monument itself was al-
lowed to stand.
Khajuu Bulag
SPRING
(GPS: N 49°02.787', E 111°36.867')
This trickle of a mineral water spring, where Chinggis
Khaan once allegedly drank, is about 2.2km west of Deluun Boldog and is easily spotted
by the beribboned tree next to it. Fill your bottles, but watch out for the leeches!
